Few of us enter academia with innate knowledge of how to connect to a classroom of students and how to foster an environment that encourages student participation and trust. Teaching to the “whole class” is difficult. Race can compound this difficulty, particularly because faculty of color are not always imagined to be and do not stand in for the image of the law professor that students have in their heads. This workshop addresses these issues head-on, and at the same time offers very practical advice about how to navigate the sometimes fraught terrain that is the law school classroom. Attendees will leave this session with some very concrete dos and don’ts. In this session, experienced teachers will offer tips about how to plan and facilitate classroom teaching and how to be a more effective teacher, both inside and outside the classroom.
