Most American law schools categorize faculty based on the courses they teach: doctrinal, clinical, legal writing, academic support, and research. Our program focuses on how professors can try to transcend these structures. Each presenter has jumped tracks, changed lanes, or otherwise straddled the tiers that persist in the legal academy. Some have lateraled to other institutions to overcome status-based restrictions. We will engage in a frank discussion about the presenters' strategies, as well as professional and personal tradeoffs. We will also discuss how individual career decisions intersect with attempts to change our institutions.
