Session attendees will experience several distinct and interactive drop-in curricular enhancements used to promote student engagement, perspective, and learning in areas of substantive law, skills building, and cross-cultural awareness. The methods presented in the workshop promote teamwork and collaborative learning, foster independence of thought, encourage transference of learned material, and build self-awareness about the legal process and the role of lawyers in society. “Come On Up” is a series of non-competitive and ungraded minute debates on such (nearly) universal – and non-threatening - subjects as cats versus dogs, on campus parking, or the pop culture disgrace that is Jersey Shore. “Hands Down” will model the use of an easily customizable board game from the 1960’s in which teams of students use a slam-o-matic to “buzz in” with the correct answers to a series of rapid-fire true-false and complete the blank questions on everything from ethics to reviewing the student handbook. (Session attendees will also be entered into a drawing to win their own authentic, vintage slam-o-matic.) “BaFa BaFa” is a unique and entertaining cultural exchange simulation which (safely) introduces students to diversity issues. Participants will screen recent video of BaFa BaFa being used in a clinic boot camp and hear audio from the program. Finally, “100 Hours of Poverty” is a four day, four hour long interactive experiential poverty awareness event (similar to a food stamp challenge). Session attendees will hear about how 100 Hours was structured, organized, and implemented across the university campus. This concurrent session will culminate in a unifying summary discussion of the common elements of successful curricular enhancements, including brainstorming about additional novel and customizable curricular add-ins.
