The significant collateral consequences of criminal convictions led Gabriel Chin to label a person’s criminal record as a “new civil death.” A criminal record impacts employment, housing, family, mental health, and the overall ability to be a full member of the community. Studies evidence people do not avail themselves of the expungement process because it is complex, expensive, and generally overwhelming. Recognizing both the community need and the lack of pro bono attorneys for such work, Wayne Law created the Expungement Navigators- a program at the intersection of undergraduate law, JD studies, and experiential education.
