The ability to engage in self-assessment provides a foundation for the skills we want students to develop. This process of critically reviewing and critiquing one’s own actions and learning from them is the ultimate tool in “learning for transfer.” The goal is to go beyond teaching a static skill set by also teaching students a language and process for examining their work so they can continue improving their skills. This plenary session will examine specific tools for teaching and evaluating student self-assessment, within three distinct models of legal education – clinics, externships, and simulation courses.
