The U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan has been interpreted broadly as the end of American nation-building and rule-of-law development assistance abroad. While the effects of the U.S. pullout are undoubtedly complex, the end of the twenty-year U.S. occupation signals changing priorities in not just U.S. foreign policy but also attitudes toward international law. This panel features experts who will discuss what the departure of the U.S. and the rise of the Taliban mean for Afghanistan, the region, and the world. Panelists will examine the Taliban’s constitutional order, U.S. approaches to promoting democracy, Chinese developmental aid, and the role of Islamic law.
