How will the move in 2020 to mostly virtual externships change the future of externships? Directors were forced to pivot to accommodate students and supervisors of field placements in their need or wish to change in-person placements to virtual. Virtual placements allowed students to remain safe from the pandemic. In some cases, the move to virtual placements may have expanded opportunities that students would not ordinarily have if they had to physically move to another city to work at a particular placement. How will the desire for virtual placements in the future for convenience or other non-pandemic reasons change the ways in which we think about placements?
