Deans and hiring committees considering lateral candidates are constrained by budgets and curricular commands from the larger faculty. A well-timed or well-publicized lateral hire can bring notoriety (good or bad), excitement (or jealousy), and/or new opportunities to a faculty. This panel will examine: • What are the benefits from looking at a lateral candidate versus hiring an entry-level candidate? • What constraints may hamper searches and targeting “available” candidates? • What are the top issues that come up in lateral negotiations? • What issues of confidentiality come up when vetting lateral candidates?
