Academics play an important role in ensuring mutual understanding in relations between East Asia and the West, all the more so in an era of escalating tensions and deepening crises, as well as growing complexity and increasing levels of deliberate and sophisticated misinformation. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly difficult for academics to remain deeply informed of developments abroad and to be heard and trusted amidst the cacophony of the public discourse. How should we understand and perform our role of using the power of words to help create mutual understanding, reduce distances, and bridge the growing divides?
