On July 20, 2012, James Eagan Holmes walked into a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, with multiple firearms and began shooting. Twelve people died and fifty-eight others were wounded. On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza shot and killed his mother as she slept in their Newtown, Connecticut, home and then drove a short distance to Sandy Hook Elementary School where he opened fire, killing twenty children and six adults before turning the gun on himself. News of these horrific events quickly turned to the fact that both shooters were previously diagnosed with mental disabilities. It was reported that Holmes was mentally ill and had been under the care of a psychiatrist. News from Sandy Hook focused on Lanza’s previous diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome. This program will examine the legal, political and public policy issues associated with guns, violence and mental disability; issues that have been pushed to the forefront of very public debates in the aftermath of these events and in the shadow of previous shootings such as the Columbine massacre of 1999.
