Rule 24: The Power and Politics of Intervention. It is sometimes possible for a non-party to a lawsuit to “intervene” in a case and gain the power to fully participate in the lawsuit as if it were a party. Indeed, intervention has become a popular and powerful mechanism for adjudicating all manner of interests and Rule 24 has itself become a flashpoint in controversial cases involving abortion and immigration, among other hot-button issues facing courts.
