The right-wing coalition elected in 2022, with Benjamin Netanyahu as prime minister, proposed an overhaul of Israel’s legal system that opponents labeled an attack on democracy. Despite sustained public protests against the proposals, the Knesset in July 2023 limited the power of the supreme court to declare governmental actions “unreasonable.” After the October Hamas attacks, the newly formed wartime Israeli government shelved the remaining parts of the overhaul, but many issues remain unresolved. This panel will discuss the past and future of the proposed overhaul as well as the Gaza war’s impact on it, Israeli society, and U.S. law schools.
