This session will highlight ways and reasons to increase collaboration with international colleagues for educators involved with externships and law school clinics. These collaborations benefit US educators and students in four main areas: 1) help us see the world through other’s eyes with focus on non-US perspectives; 2) increase our own creativity and problem-solving abilities 3) create clinical alliances to help students and faculty work for social justice in border-crossing areas such as migration, climate change, internet privacy, labor, and global poverty; and 4) open cross-border educational opportunities for students. Takeaways will include lessons learned from prior collaborations and individual reflection; a group exercise in clinic/externship design for international exchange; and a list of resources and technological options to foster ongoing collaboration. Learning objectives: • Participants will learn about resources to increase collaboration across borders and build relationships that can support student learning and faculty enrichment and research. These will include information about AALS sub-committees as well as conferences and publications that encourage collaboration among across borders. This session includes a special focus on collaborations that use technology to reduce barriers and cost. • Participants will learn how to foster faculty exchange and student international collaboration in both externships and clinics with the goal of working for social justice. • Participants will learn how international collaborations develop creativity and an ability to see the world through other’s eyes and with a focus on perspectives from outside the United States. They will understand how to communicate these benefits to colleagues, deans, and students.
